CAN you Trick your MIND Into THINKING IT'S FULL?

Written by

The answer may be yes. The secret, however, seems to be setting expectations. What do I mean? Well, one study with some very clever scientists either told subjects that a shake they were getting was high or low calorie even though both shakes were the same calories (Crum et al. 2011 - Mind over milkshakes: Mindsets, not just nutrients, determine ghrelin response). Guess what? Turns out that when the individuals thought the shake was higher calorie, their bodies' decreased their hunger hormones more and thus felt more satiated!

Hunger is caused by a complicated chemistry of numerous hormones, specifically leptin and ghrelin that have the ability to override our “willpower” and drive us to eat. Leptin is a hormone, made by fat cells, that decreases your appetite. Ghrelin is a hormone that increases appetite, and also plays a role in how much we weigh.

What’s amazing with the outcome of the research is that each of these eaters metabolizes the shakes quite differently in response to their unique thoughts. In other words, what you think and feel about a food can be as important a determinant of its caloric value and its effect on body weight.

How your Brains Eat

If you’re feeling guilty about eating the ice cream or just hating yourself for it, the hypothalamus, located in your brain, will take this negative thought and send signals down the sympathetic fibers of the autonomic nervous system. This initiates negative responses in the digestive organs which make your body not fully metabolize the calories. Furthermore, these same negative thoughts will also affect the endocrine system which will decrease your calorie-burning efficiency by increasing your insulin and cortisol response. So the thoughts you think about the food you eat instantly become reality in your body through your mind.

Therefore, ditch the guilt. Try and have positive perceptions of how full a meal will make you prior to eating it.
