Amazingly Good for you Eggnog

For some of us, the holiday season means it’s time to break out the eggnog. Combining yolks, cream, unhealthy amounts of sugar, and possibly alcohol, I wouldn’t exactly call traditional eggnog a heart attack in a cup, but I would say that it’s definitely going to wreak havoc with your waistline and your blood sugar.

If choosing the store-bought concoction, you'll get an unhealthy dose of various milk ingredients, dried eggs, guar gum, carrageenan (cancer-causing carcinogen), protein hydrolysate, dextrose and artificial colours.

Try this nutty alternative which gets its creaminess and thickness from heart-healthy almonds and its sweetness from fruit, with enough of the traditional spices that you won’t miss your old-fashioned eggnog at all.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup raw almonds
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 2 frozen ripe bananas
  • 1 pitted date, pre-soaked for 1 hour
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Puree all ingredients except cinnamon in your juicing blender until smooth. You may need to add additional liquid to reach the desired texture.
  2. Refrigerate, serve cold, sprinkling with cinnamon just before serving.
